It’s really trippy when a coworker turns to you and says, “Now that you’re my boss, I’m going to email you my schedule later.” It’s really trippy. At the same time, having this amazing team actually frees me up to do more interesting things and have more say in the directions we take. I’ve taken up work-journaling again to calm my nerves. Lessons learned,...

My drop in the deluge of emails.
Dear President Obama, I want to express my sincere gratitude to you for taking steps to fulfill your campaign promise to end US-sponsored torture. I was very happy to hear about your Executive Order requiring the CIA to comply by the guidelines in the Army Field Manual, closing secret prisons, ending rendition for torture, and providing the International Committee of the Red Cross with access to...

Day two of playing with some of the kids in the office… Man! Little boys can be a handful! Well, so can little girls, but at least I understand girls — especially the girls that are outnumbered by boys all the time. But then I think about it, and I realize that I can see myself in all of them, both the obstinance and the shyness.

Sometimes I wish I can direct them to an FAQ.
1. When’s the wedding? We haven’t decided yet. Once we nail down a venue, we will nail down a time based on its availability. We’re currently in the research phase of our investigation. 2. Well, but do you kind of know around when you might have it? Maybe August at the earliest, but more likely fall, with the possibility of winter. Maybe next year, if things gets...

Above and all around — he sneaked a look now and then — a vast scrim of pale blue sky rose up in every direction. Not a cloud to mar the azure perfection. And it was far too high for birds, even eagles. A little further down he might ahve asked himself, “Why are we climbing?” But the closer they got to the summit, the clearer the answer became. They climbed because they...

I was talking with my roommate today about making videos for Nomi; there were so many short movie ideas I had in my head that I’d love to bring into being. It seems normal; before computers came into my life, artistic communication was like the words of my soul. She listened for a while and agreed with me, and added her own ideas too. And then she looked at me and said, “But...

The results of the China milk recall is so... →
China’s government says that milk is now safe. Prime Minister Wen Jiabao gave a rare public apology for failing to prevent the crisis. But families of the victims are weary of another food scandal, and more hollow reassurances - they have little faith in the country’s food safety systems. I wonder if Chinese government officials and health inspectors let their children drink this...

I remember writing to President George Bush when I was in 2nd grade; our whole class wrote to tell him that we’d heard he’d gotten sick and had to go to the hospital, so we hoped he’d feel better soon. He (or someone like him) wrote back and thanked us for our letters and assured us that he was feeling much better. Eighteens years later, you can actually email the president and...

I am so dramatic.
After spending $99 to buy a book online, I found a PDF copy of it somewhere else. Too late to cancel my order now, and it’ll be a hassle to send it back once I get it. One can argue that the physical book will be more convenient than an ecopy. After I get over my grief, I suppose I will agree. I do tend to highlight and write commentary in the margins of my books. (<—- This is why...

An undercover investigation on child exploitation... →
[length: 25:25] About the Pierre Guynot case… sometimes I wonder if the international public would be as outraged about the outcome of his case if his victims were little girls. What he did to the young boys was appalling. Young girls are raped every single day, though; who cries out for them?
