One of the guys on the business team finally talked to me about what was going on at work. After hearing really awful stories from friends in Silicon Valley whose companies had gone through the same thing, I’ve been really, really pessimistic about the upcoming changes.
I sort of feel like a kid who hears a snippet of some serious parental conversation, out of context and without...

There are times when I try to look on the bright side of things and am super thankful for life. Today is not that day.
I crave a change of scenery, something completely new. I have no idea how or what I’d like to do. But sometimes I wish I could just quit my day job and go immerse myself in a completely random culture… Maybe fishing in southeast Asia, or shepherding in Romania, or...

Anxiety - fear of evil spirits, of ancestors, of nature and the wild, of a tribal hierarchy, of quite everyday things - strikes deep into the whole structure of rural African thought. Every man has his place and, call it fear or respect, a great weight grinds down the individual spirit, stunting curiosity. People won’t take the initiative, won’t take things into their own hands or on...

I don’t normally put much stock in online learning, but this school was distinguished by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), which means there might be something about this school that’s worth noting. Yay or nay?

Thoughts on a lunch break.
I don’t know if forgiveness comes before or after the healing.
But if one truly believes in the reality of a future where one can feel whole again, perhaps it is possible to, for the sake of that future, have the strength to not allow the destructive cycles of the past to repeat itself and to not dish out the crap that had been dished out to you.
Maybe that is the power of a hope and trust...

Ubuntu Privacy Remix. →
Ubuntu Privacy Remix is a modified Live-CD based on Ubuntu Linux. UPR is not intended for permanent installation on hard disk. The goal of Ubuntu Privacy Remix is to provide an isolated, working environment where private data can be dealt with safely. The system installed on the computer running UPR remains untouched.

I found this while browsing through some articles about how LGTB groups are strongly opposed to Rick Warren presiding over Obama’s inauguration. This is a Christian article written by a guy struggling with homosexual feelings. I think he makes some points worth chewing on.

Sadie McKee.
One of the critics of Sex and the City expressed disgust at the prospect of using the characters in the movie as role models of femininity, specifically citing the movie Sadie McKee as an example of a strong, beautiful and classy woman. “They just don’t make women like her anymore.”
Out of curiosity, I rented the film, and I have to say that I’m absolutely impressed....

AS RUSSIAN tanks rolled into Georgia in August, another force was also mobilising—not in the physical world, but online. Russian nationalists (or indeed anyone else) who wished to take part in the attack on Georgia could do so from anywhere with an internet connection, simply by visiting one of several pro-Russia websites and downloading the software and instructions needed to perform a...

On the one hand, going through the initial stages of the homebuying process was really enlightening, because now I am not blithely unaware of the state of my finances and now I know that I need to get my crap together. On the other hand, it’s really frustrating to figure out in the first place that my crap is not together.
Mental note to financially-minded parents out there: teach your kids...

Warmth.
Prior to the trip out to the west coast, I was freezing my tush off here in DC. (Well, to be fair, I was also walking around in a t-shirt/sweatshirt and jeans combo, like it was still fall weather.) Now that I’ve experienced warmer climates and am back in DC, I’m far better able to withstand the cold weather (with the help of wool sweaters).

More philosophical blah-blah.
It just seems to me that, when I would like to ramp up the pace of things I want to do and places I want to go, I encounter a recurring theme on the importance of slowing down and savoring life instead of eyeing for future goals.
The childhood stories I’ve heard about people who regret neglecting their spouse and children to chase big dreams are not lost on me. The question I have is, what...
